Taken from the 13th floor of the Guarantee Building during my recent trip to Buffalo. Note the window's ledge, of which the window itself is a giant, circular porthole. The entire exterior of the building is covered in terra-cotta carvings, while the interior features extensive mosaics, stained glass ceilings, converted hydraulic-powered elevators, and details right down to the building's name embossed upon the doorknob plates.
A testament to its age, it was built during a time when electricity wasn't thought to replace gas power. It requires bulbs that are no longer manufactured and are only hand-made, if that...
Well, with custom lightbulbs, I assume there is a slightly elevated cost to the upkeep and maitenance of the building. Not that I frown on custom things, but practicality and imagination can be at arms sometimes. Not to debate their choice in design, but it seems to me that the light fixture would be more readily manipulated than the bulb, which, though odd, is interesting nayway. Wish I could have seen a few of those details, too.
I'd forgotten to mention that the building was saved from probable demolition by a law firm, who has sunk several million dollars into its present rennovation, and plans to invest several more over the next few years...and despite any amount of pictures, you just have to walk around it to see the entire exterior carved out of terra cotta, or the sheets of stained-glass ceilings, etc. to get the real impression of the building.

We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
